Who Is Salman Khan?

Born Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan on 27 December 1965 in Indore, he grew up around the film industry — his father Salim Khan co-wrote some of Bollywood's biggest hits as one half of Salim-Javed. Salman's own start was quieter, a supporting role in 1988's "Biwi Ho To Aisi," but everything changed a year later. Sooraj Barjatya's "Maine Pyaar Kiya" made him an overnight star, won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, and introduced the soft-spoken "Prem" persona that Bollywood romance spent the next decade imitating.

What's interesting is that Salman himself rarely sings — his real gift has always been picking the song that gets stuck in your head for a decade. "Didi Tera Devar Deewana," from "Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!" in 1994, is still played at more Indian weddings than almost anything else. After a rough patch at the box office in the early 2000s, "Wanted" (2009) and the "Dabangg" films reinvented him completely, and he even stepped up to sing a couple of his own tracks — "Jag Ghoomeya" and "Main Hoon Hero Tera" among them. Off screen, he founded the Being Human Foundation in 2007, and has two National Film Awards to his name as a producer, for "Chillar Party" and "Bajrangi Bhaijaan."
